Strikes

Striking is one of the main aspects of Karate, This is where Karate diverts away from alot of the other Japanese martial arts, that deal with grapling and joint muniplulation, and focuses more on the hitting and striking techniques. Although allot of styles do teach Grappling in their syllabus as well.

Depending on what strike you are performing there any many different skills you can develop to help improve your striking. The first is to make sure the power if coming from your hip, twisting to get your full body weight behind the strike and not just your shoulder. The second is a simple but very effective skill, this is to relax the strike up until the point of impact, this helps increase the speed and power of your technique.
